The Apple Store at Maytree Cottage
The Apple Store really was the place where apples were stored and cider made, and is the ground floor of our Victorian Forest farmhouse. It was completely refurbished in 2012 and now provides accommodation for up to 4 guests in one double bedroom, a large kitchen/diner/sitting room with sofa bed and a bathroom with bath & shower over.
All on one level with private off-road parking and covered storage area immediately outside, it is ideal for anyone who finds stairs challenging.
Outside, the south-facing terrace overlooks the apple orchard with stream and waterfall. There’s a small private garden with patio, BBQ and Pizza oven, and guests are welcome to use the orchard, pick fruit and veg in season from the kitchen garden or use the fire-pit by the Gypsy Wagon when available.
Home-made breads, pastries and cakes are available daily from the farmhouse; we offer Afternoon Teas and meals to order, and will provide best local produce for breakfasts.
The Apple Store is situated in a quiet valley near Blakeney on the eastern edge of the Forest of Dean with lovely walks from the doorstep. Blakeney, which has an Italian restaurant, Chip Shop, small village shop, post office and pub is about a 10min walk.
A car is advised; nearest bus stop 300yds; nearest train station 3 miles.
The Forest of Dean borders England and Wales, forming a peninsula between the Rivers Severn and Wye. It is an area teeming with wildlife including wild boar, feral sheep and deer, and bird-spotters come to see our various raptors – Peregrine falcons, buzzards, sparrowhawks, red kites and even migratory ospreys – as well as the numerous birds which pass through on their way to and from Slimbridge (just 7 miles away as the crow flies).
Ancient industries of coal and iron mining, forestry and charcoal-making are long gone, and now the old railway lines have been transformed into cycle tracks which criss-cross the Forest attracting cyclists and walkers to explore the 41 sq miles of ancient woodland.
The River Severn’s estuary is about 2 miles and famous for the Severn Bore, salmon and elvers.
We’re proud of our traditional foods here and have world-class high quality, unique foods like Stinking Bishop cheese, Severn Cider and local smoked salmon from artisan craftsmen, as well as our own home-grown fruit, vegetables and walnuts.
We’re dog-friendly and family-friendly (2 travel cots are provided) and open all year.
